The story (no spoilers)
Sixteen-year-old Anne Shirley, home from Queen's Academy, is about to become the teacher of the Avonlea school on Prince Edward Island. Her head is full of rose-tinted ideals about shaping young minds, but the real world arrives first, in the form of a furious new neighbour and a Jersey cow with a taste for his oats. Over the next two years, Anne must earn the respect of pupils who test her patience, from the sharpest to the most stubborn. At Green Gables, Marilla's household unexpectedly grows when two orphaned twins, one sweet and one full of mischief, need a home. Anne also throws herself into improving the village, with plans grander than the village is ready for, and meets new kindred spirits along the way. Her friendships with Diana and Gilbert shift as she edges toward womanhood. Warm, funny and full of imagination, Anne of Avonlea asks what a girl with big dreams makes of the ordinary life in front of her.
