The story (no spoilers)

Captain Hastings follows Hercule Poirot to the French seaside village of Merlinville, summoned by a client who has begged the great detective for protection. They arrive too late: Paul Renauld lies stabbed in the back, buried in a freshly dug grave beside a golf course. Poirot now faces a puzzle with no shortage of candidates, from the dead man's grieving wife and his son to the neighbour next door and a mysterious visitor seen the day before. Worse, the Paris Sûreté has sent Giraud, a brisk and scornful investigator who has no patience for Poirot's quiet method of patient reasoning and long memory for old crimes. While the two rivals race for the truth, Hastings finds his attention pulled elsewhere, by a girl he met on the Calais train who called herself Cinderella and who has an unsettling way of turning up again. What was Renauld afraid of, and who wanted him buried so quickly?
